Prepaid Metering – How to Buy Electricity Online in Nigeria.

Electricity Online
Prepaid Meters

Prepaid meters have become a smart a smart device owing to the fact that we can buy Electricity Online from the comfort of our homes and offices. Power supply has been a major source of concern especially among the middle and low income earners in Nigeria as the elites have been made to patronise petrol and diesel generators to serve as a substitute to the epileptic power system. Over the years, as a growing up child, I was made to understand that having 10 hours uninterrupted power supply from NEPA (as it was then called) was nearly impossible but the Electricity Bills kept increasing in arithmetic progression. In 2013, the Jonathan Goodluck administration privatised the power sector which gave birth to individual Generation, Transmission and Distribution companies. Ordinarily, someone would have thought that with this development power supply will improve, but instead 5 years down the line, we are still hoping things get better.

The Prepaid meter was introduced by PHCN in 2006 to abolish the exorbitant estimated bills been paid at that time. Personally I saw it as a welcome development because instead of paying N8,000 to N10,000 monthly for few hours of power per day, I started paying between N3,000 to N5,000 monthly which was based on my usage.

However prepaid meter have the following advantages as compared to the postpaid meter reading and estimated billing system.

  1. Accurate Billing System: Recharging a prepaid meter is similar to recharging Prepaid phone, you don’t end up paying bill for services not rendered.
  2. No Extra Reconnection Fee: With the introduction of the Prepaid Meters, Reconnection or Disconnection fees became a thing of the past as this service is purely Pay-as-you-go.
  3. Flexible Payment System: Payments can be done online at the comfort of your homes or offices
